Proyecto Renacer: Transforming La Sierra Through Coffee

Proyecto Renacer was created with a clear purpose in 2017: Transform the La Sierra neighborhood in Medellín through coffee. What was once a region marked by social challenges is now being redefined through specialty coffee production, creating new economic opportunities for local families.

The project is led by brothers Cristian and Jhonatan Raigosa, who saw untapped potential in the area’s coffee. After discovering the region’s quality at random during a cupping event, they began working directly with producers, organizing small farms and building a structured system to improve quality, processing, and market access. Today, Proyecto Renacer brings together more than 30 growers across 13 small farms, each averaging around two hectares.

What sets Proyecto Renacer apart is the combination of technical expertise and community focus. Cristian contributes his background as a roaster and barista, connecting production with market expectations, while Jhonatan leads field operations, producer relationships, and quality control.

Together, they have developed fermentation and processing protocols that boost the coffee while working closely with the local community to create long-term social and economic impact.

Specialty Coffee Innovation in Medellín, Colombia

Since 2017, Proyecto Renacer has evolved into far more than a coffee coordination project, it has become a space for experimentation and innovation within specialty coffee production in Medellín. By organizing production across multiple small farms in La Sierra, the project began developing fermentation focused coffees designed to push beyond traditional Colombian profiles. This led to the creation of some of most recognizable coffees and fermentation profiles, including Red Bomb, Tropical Summer, and Very Berry.

Their work and social impact have also gained international recognition, being featured in the Where Coffee Takes You documentary series by Angelino’s Coffee, helping showcase how specialty coffee is transforming the identity of La Sierra through innovation, quality, and community driven production.

What makes this story even more remarkable is the context in which it began. For many years, La Sierra was associated with social conflict and instability, making the decision to visit the neighborhood uncertain at first. However, once Cristian and Jhonatan connected with local producers, they discovered exceptional coffee-growing conditions, strong community roots, and an opportunity to create something completely different through specialty coffee.
